Airedales were used by the British Army in World War I to carry messages to soldiers behind enemy lines. Airedale terriers were first bred to hunt otters in the valleys of the River Aire. Airedales were once the dog of choice for police search and rescue work. Two Airedales were lost when the Titanic sank. Airedales were sometimes used by commoners to poach game from the estates of their wealthy masters.
